826 National is a nonprofit, founded by author Dave Eggers, to offer a variety of inventive programs that provide under-resourced students ages 6-18 with opportunities to explore their creativity and improve their writing skills. Lansing, Michigan has some of the most underperforming schools in the state, and is in dire need of after-school programs aimed at helping children improve their education. In order to maintain their tuition-free services, the 826 programs have quirky storefronts that are somehow related to the area in which they reside. For Lansing, I pulled from the political history of the city, and the issues of fake news and alternative facts to develop the 826 Bureau of Truth.
The proposed 826 storefront identity is variable but works within a system of squares and colors that combine with distorted images of political figures to convey ideas of more open, inclusive communication and a breakdown of barriers. The name style can change from a set of predetermined four letter words that embody divergent ideas: fake, post, most, less, more, etc. The color system is based on opposing American political parties, binaries, economic clashes and the interesting effect of the interaction of RGB and CMYK color spaces. In addition to a standard identity system, packaging and environmental graphics, as well as a set of iconography and typographic patterning that all work together in a contemporary, tongue-in-cheek way that is informational, educational and fun. In that same vein there is the gamification of business cards by each employee selecting their political affiliation and each product's "transparency rating" which adds a participatory and variable element to the system.
